Night Camera for iPhone

While the iPhone’s built-in camera is certainly convenient, its small aperture and slow shutter speed can make taking great pictures a challenge, particularly after the sun goes down. Night Camera gives you a few tools to make the most of the iPhone camera when light is hard to come by.

The $1 app from Sudobility bills itself as a solution for taking low-light photography. Under these conditions, the slightest bit of camera movement can result in unacceptable blur.

In Stable mode, Night Camera combats camera motion by using your iPhone’s accelerometer to detect motion, delaying the shot until the device is still. You can adjust the sensitivity of this feature in the settings. Stable mode is a wonderful feature, and it is actually helpful in all kinds of shooting situations, regardless of how much light is available.

Night Camera offers a variety of other features that you can mix and match depending upon your situation. A Timer mode allows you to set a delay from one to 60 seconds with four settings in between. The app also features filter settings, which include black-and-white, sepia, and a mode for harsh lighting conditions. All modes can take advantage of a full-screen shutter button. A time stamp overlay is handy too.

Once you’ve got your shot, you can export the image to your iPhone photo library in either 1,600-by-1,200 or 427-by-320 resolutions.

Night Camera brings some wonderful features, but the app suffers from a few flaws. It’s a memory-intensive program, so don’t be surprised if you experience a freeze from time to time that requires a restart of your iPhone. Also, when you take a photo, don’t be tempted to move your iPhone immediately upon hearing the shutter sound and seeing the spinning activity icon. The app takes the photo a split-second after that point, so you’ll miss the shot if you move too soon.

Those quirks aside, Night Camera adds many valuable features to the iPhone’s much-maligned camera. If you’re among the camera’s critics, Night Camera is worth a try for anyone looking to take better pictures via the iPhone.

D-Link adds CAPTCHA to home routers to prevent against attacks

A series of recent Internet security attacks on home and small office computers are compromising networks where users least expect it - their routers. These malicious software invasions, in which users unknowingly download a Trojan horse when performing common tasks, invade the router to detect wireless capabilities, then alter the victim's domain name system (DNS) records so that all future traffic is diverted through the, attackers' network first.

In response to the growing number of these attacks and subsequent user security concerns, D-Link Systems Inc. has integrated CAPTCHA, a system, designed to detect whether responses are human or computer-generated, into its home and small office routers as an extra safety measure.

CAPTCHAs are used to prevent malicious software from performing actions that degrade the quality of service on a network, such as those found in worms, viruses and Trojan horses.

D-Link of Fountain Valley, California is a global provider of connectivity solutions for small, medium and large enterprise business networking. The company designs, develops and manufactures networking, broadband, digital electronics, voice and data communications solutions for the digital home, small office/home office (SOHO), small to medium business (SMB), and workgroup to enterprise environments.

The term CAPTCHA is an acronym for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.

CAPTCHA is a type of challenge-response test used in computing to ensure that responses are generated by humans, not computers. A common type of CAPTCHA requires the user to type letters or numbers from a distorted image that appears on the screen.

"Unlike other brands, the majority of D-Link routers are not as easy to be compromised since our design is proprietary. However, we're excited to be the first in the market to announce we have taken the initiative to implement CAPTCHA into our CNC router machines, thus providing yet another layer of security to our customers," said AJ Wang, chief technology officer of D-Link.

WSJ quasi-confirms 3D camera for Xbox 360

Rumors about Microsoft’s impending attack on Nintendo have popped up here and there, but the WSJ has gone on record by saying that MS is, in fact, working on a 3D camera system that resembles the Wii’s motion system.

But the Xbox 360 version won’t require you to flail around like a bafoon with a stick in hand. The purported 3D camera will track your entire body, so you won’t have any controllers in hand while playing.

It could be announced as early as E3 in June, but the WSJ’s sources say it won’t come out until next year.

Garmin adds built-in digital camera to waterproof GPS units

Forget about cameras with built-in GPS–Garmin has just announced two new handheld GPS units with built-in digital cameras: the Garmin Oregon 500 and 500t (which is essentially the same unit preloaded with 100K U.S. topographic maps for $100 more). While the 3.2-megapixel built-in camera isn’t going to replace your dSLR just quite yet, consider how much you can do with a 2-megapixel iPhone snapshot and you’ll start to see the value here,it's price is lower than 3D camera.

As you’d expect, the Garmin Oregon 500 is capable of creating geotagged images on the fly. In fact, it automatically geotags all the photos you shoot, allowing you to easily navigate back to locations in any of your images in the future. The unit is waterproof and rugged, and includes a built-in 3-axis tilt-compensated compass, so you don’t have to start moving for it to determine which way you are pointed (which is one of the things that drives me crazy about both my portable GPS device and my iPhone). And anyone who has ever tried to use an iPhone in cold weather will appreciate the Oregon 500’s “glove-friendly” 3-inch touchscreen. There’s even a built-in barometric altimeter that tracks changes in pressure to determine your precise altitude.

Available immediately, the Oregon 550 and 550t sell for $499.99 and $599.99 respectively and come with 850MB of internal memory, as well as a microSD card slot for expansion (or even viewing pictures from other devices).
